What is a Jaeger junction box?

What makes the Jaeger unique is its bayonet connection: insert the plug and turn the casing a quarter turn (90 degrees) for a sturdy, vibration-resistant connection - ideal for heavy transport. New tractors are often fitted with a Jaeger junction box as standard.

The Jaeger not only supports basic lighting (such as indicator lights and brake lights), but also additional functions such as constant positive (PIN 9, for interior lighting or a fridge), reverse lights (PIN 8) and rear fog light (PIN 2). This provides a reliable basis for LED systems on trailers.

Bayonet fitting: how does it work and why is it better?

Bayonet coupling is inspired by industrial connectors: two or more PINs/grooves create a twist-lock. With Jaeger, you twist the casing by hand - no tools required.

• More rigidly fixed than screw or clip systems (resists vibrations and dirt).
• Better waterproof (IP standard often higher with good quality).
• Faster connection - useful in cold weather or muddy conditions.

Tip: Always turn fully to the click, and check for dirt in the grooves to prevent corrosion.

Advantages for semi-trailer construction

• High retention force under vibration/shock (better than clip or push systems on Multicon).
• Better protection against dirt/corrosion (ring + O-ring).
• Fast coupling/uncoupling in loading/unloading.

Mounting tips specifically for trailers:

Use contact grease (anti-corrosion) on PINs in outdoor applications or salt-rich environments.
Mount the box with sealant (silicone or butyl) on the crossbar/cabinet - avoid water ingress through mounting holes.
Clean PINs/grooves before first use (dirt leads to oxidation and higher resistance).

Technical specifications of the Jaeger plug

• Contacts: 13 solid round PINs (low contact resistance, good current flow).
• Closure: bayonet-coupling (90° twist-lock with guide pins/grooves + ring seal).
• Waterproofness: IP67 or higher for Expert series (100% waterproof when mounted correctly).
• Additional functions for trailer LEDs: PIN 9 (permanent positive for interior lighting/fridge), PIN 8 (reverse lights), PIN 2 (rear fog lights), PIN 12 (reserved for future functions).
• Recommended wire sections (ISO 11446): 1.5 mm² for signal pins (1-8), at least 2.5 mm² for power/ground (pins 3,9,10,11,13) to keep voltage drop low under LED load.

Both systems follow ISO 11446 (same electrical pinout), but differ in design - useful for new construction or replacement.

In semi-trailer construction, we often see Jaeger being preferred for long-term reliability, especially for LED lighting with higher loads.

Connecting a Jaeger junction box requires attention to these points:

• Connect wiring according to the scheme (see figure) and connect constant current correctly.
• Connect constant current and corresponding mass via at least 2.5 mm² wire.
• No changes to the vehicle electrical system.
• For CAN-bus vehicles: set the vehicle to trailer mode to prevent error codes (or use a CAN-bus module).

Tips for connection and interference prevention

When connecting the Jaeger junction box to a trailer, these points to bear in mind will help ensure everything runs smoothly:

• Wire section: Use at least 2.5 mm² for PIN 9 (permanent plus) and PIN 13 (mass) - this keeps voltage drop low, even when charging battery or refrigerator.
• Sealing and maintenance: Remove adapters when not in use to prevent condensation and moisture. A dummy cap or regular check keeps contacts clean.
• CAN-bus integration: In modern vehicles, additional loads can trigger warning messages. A CAN-bus-compatible module or setting the system to trailer mode often resolves this – see our CAN-bus solutions for more information.
• Ground connection: Ensure separate masses (PIN 3/11/13) to avoid ground loops - this prevents flickering or interference in LED lighting.
• General check: After mounting, carry out a quick truck with the trailer connected – minor adjustments often make all the difference.
