Driving lights for trucks

Driving lights for 4×4 and off-road vehicles

For driving lights designed for 4×4 and off-road vehicles, the emphasis is on maximum visibility in all conditions. These driving lights must be suitable for heavy-duty use and able to withstand maximum mechanical stress. TRALERT® offers several models that meet these requirements and have even been tested during the Dakar Rally. In addition to producing a considerable amount of light, these driving lights feature an extra-strong housing and a high level of water and dust resistance (IP rating). If the driving light is also used on public roads, ECE approval is mandatory. All TRALERT® driving lights comply with this requirement.

How many driving lights are permitted?

The permitted number of driving lights depends on the vehicle category and the design of the main beam system. According to UN R48, two or four driving lights are generally permitted, provided they are approved in accordance with UN R149. For vehicles in category N3, two additional driving lights may also be fitted. Regardless of the total number of driving lights fitted, the combined reference value of the main-beam functions that can be illuminated simultaneously must not exceed 100 (corresponding to a maximum of 430,000 cd).

Tips for choosing driving lights

Start with the desired light image, as this determines more than just the light output. A spot beam projects light narrowly and far ahead and is designed for long-distance visibility. A flood beam, on the other hand, illuminates a wide area around the vehicle and is suitable for manoeuvring and working at low speeds. A combination beam combines both features and is often the practical choice when the vehicle is used both on the road and off-road. Two driving lights with the same number lumen can therefore produce very different results.

LED driving lights in 12V, 24V and multi-voltage

Next, consider ease of connection. Check the cable length, the connector type and whether the model is compatible with your vehicle’s electrical system. A multi-voltage version (9–36V) works on both 12V and 24V systems and simplifies mounting within a mixed fleet. For vehicles with a CAN-bus, the electrical connection requires extra attention.

Finally, determine how many driving lights you are permitted to fit. According to UN R48, two or four main-beam functions are permitted in principle, with two additional ones allowed for vehicle category N3 under certain conditions. In this regard, the combined reference value of the high-beam functions that may be illuminated simultaneously must not exceed 100. Therefore, before purchasing, add together the Reference number of your existing vehicle lighting and that of the new driving lights. Driving lights with position lights

A large part of the TRALERT® range features integrated position lights, which also serve as parking lights. This allows you to combine two functions in a single unit, reducing the need for cable routing and cabling.

Most series feature duo-color position lights. You can switch between white and amber coloured light, so that the light image matches your vehicle’s contour lights. The Phantom Series features a wraparound light strip, the Ypsilon Series has a distinctive Y-shape with a built-in warning light function, and the OZZ lighting features a dynamic start-up sequence.

If you wish to use the position lights officially as position lights or daytime running lights, a version with ECE R148 approval is required. The Phantom Series and the OZZ models feature this approval, in addition to ECE R10 and ECE R149.

Driving lights with warning light function

For additional safety signalling, a driving light with a warning light function can be an important selection criterion. Driving lights with an amber coloured warning light function combine driving lights and warning signals in a single unit, which is of particular interest for, amongst others, work vehicles, transport equipment and specialised vehicle construction. Where the warning light function is used as official warning lighting, a version with ECE R65 approval is required. ECE R65 sets requirements for, amongst other things, light output, light distribution and light colour; separate regulations apply to mounting. Finally, in modern vehicles, CAN bus systems, cabling and the correct electrical control system must be taken into account.
