Side marker lights serve more than just a practical purpose. In truck styling, Danish and Swedish side marker lights are particularly popular. They give trucks a distinctive look and are available in various designs. Models with a dark lens, often referred to as ‘Dark Look’, are also widely used.

When making your choice, appearance naturally plays a role, but the light function and type approval remain just as important. Therefore, do not focus solely on the design, but also on suitability for your vehicle and the desired mounting position.

Fault report following the installation of LED side marker lights

After replacing conventional side marker lights with LED lighting, a fault warning may appear on the dashboard. This is because LED lights generally consume less power. Some vehicles do not recognise this lower power consumption and therefore incorrectly report a faulty light.

One possible solution is an additional resistance, which adjusts the electrical load. Whether this is necessary and suitable varies from vehicle to vehicle. Furthermore, a resistance generates heat and must therefore be selected and fitted correctly.

Another key focus is electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Without adequate EMC interference suppression, electronic lighting can interfere with radio equipment, for example. That is why, at TRALERT®, we pay close attention to the EMC features of our lighting.

Are side marker lights compulsory on a truck?

Yes, for trucks wider than 2.10 metres, side marker lights are, in principle, compulsory. The lighting must emit white light at the front and red light at the rear. What is the difference between 12V and 24V side marker lights?

The difference lies in the supply voltage for which the light is suitable. Trucks typically use a 24V electrical system, whilst lighter vehicles often operate on 12V.
