Rear lights for trucks, trailers and utility vehicles

For trucks and trailers , you will often be replacing a rear light within an existing installation. You should therefore check the fitting dimensions, mounting points and connections.

Commonly used connections include an open wire end, a 5- or 8-pin bayonet connection and a 7-pin AMP-connector. A suitable connection prevents unnecessary modifications to the cabling.

Rear lights on commercial vehicles are exposed to moisture, de-icing salt, dirt, vibrations and intensive cleaning. Models with an IP69K rating offer protection against high-pressure hot-water cleaning.

What functions does an LED rear light have?

An LED rear light unit can combine a rear light, brake light, indicator, rear fog light, reverse light and licence plate light. Multiple functions in a single unit reduce the number of individual lights and cable entries.

Shape and mounting dimensions

Round rear lights, also known as ‘hamburger lights’, are commonly found on trailers, trucks and work vehicles. Square and rectangular units often combine multiple light functions within a compact housing. Oval, triangular and slimline versions are also available.

Before purchasing, always measure the height, width, installation depth and the centre-to-centre distance of the mounting points. Also take a look at the most common shapes of LED rear lights and the modern VC-6000 serie.

12V, 24V and CAN-bus

Always check the vehicle’s voltage. Trucks and semi-trailers usually operate on 24V, whilst commercial vehicles and trailers often use 12V. A 12–24V rear light supports both voltages.

In modern vehicles, the low power consumption of LED lighting can trigger a fault warning. A CAN-bus-compatible solution or additional module may therefore be required.

Approval and fitting

LED rear lights for use on public roads must comply with the applicable approval requirements. UN R148 covers various light signalling functions, including rear lights, brake lights, indicators, rear fog lights and reverse lights. UN R150 applies to retro-reflective devices.

The mounting on the vehicle must also be correct. UN R48 sets out requirements regarding, amongst other things, mounting height, distance, visibility and switching. An approved rear light therefore does not automatically mean that any mounting is permitted.
