Reflectors from TRALERT®
In addition to LED lighting, TRALERT® also specialises in supplying high-quality reflectors. These are available in various colours, such as white, red and orange reflectors. The orange-coloured reflector is also sometimes described as amber . TRALERT®’s retroreflectors are easy to fit to a variety of vehicles. A reflector does not emit light itself, but it does increase visibility on the road. A reflector therefore has no Volt, wattage or Ampere. Furthermore, a reflector indicates the length and width of your vehicle. This helps to improve communication and safety for other road users. Reflectors can be fitted to vehicles such as trailers or cars, but can also be used to mark objects, for example at a driveway entrance or on a bollard.
Retroreflectors offer an extra bit of safety. When light shines on a reflector, the reflector bounces the light back. As a result, the reflector, and the vehicle to which it is attached, are highly visible. Besides being mounted on vehicles, a reflector is also suitable for indicating things. Think of bollards at a driveway.
Retroreflectors ensure that you are more visible to other road users. As well as ensuring your own safety, using a reflector can also save you from a fine. This is because reflector are compulsory on some vehicles. All the regulations relating to retroreflectors for trailers and cars will be covered later.
Different reflector colours
TRALERT® offers a wide range of products. For the retroreflectors, this means that in addition to different shapes and sizes, there are also different colours available. The different colours allow everyone to make their choice. Within the range, TRALERT® has three different reflector colours: red reflectors, white reflectors and orange reflectors. The different colours are mandatory for certain areas on your vehicle. For example, a reflector must be red at the rear of your vehicle, orange amber) at the side and white at the front.
Red reflectors
Red reflectors are the most common. You may be able to recognise them from the bollards along the road in the verge. Besides the round and rectangular shape, the red reflectors are also available as triangular reflectors. Different ways how you can fix the red models include a self-adhesive m3 strip, or screw fixing.
White reflectors
Like the red reflectors, the white ones are also recognisable from the bollards along the roadside. In fact, the white reflectors are visible at the bollards located on the left side of the road. The white reflectors are for the front of your vehicle.
Orange(amber) reflectors
The colour orange is often called amber, these colours are just the same. Amber comes from English and is used to indicate colour. Amber has the well-known orange colour. So amber is nothing more than professional language for the colour orange.
Mandatory reflectors on trailers
Every vehicle has its own rules and regulations. When it comes to reflectors, the trailer is a good example. This is because all the different colours are compulsory on a trailer. Before a trailer is allowed on public roads, it must be fitted with at least:
-
- Two white reflectors at the front, these must not be triangular. They must be mounted at least 250mm from the ground with a maximum of 900mm.
-
- One orange reflector on both sides. Again, it must be between 250mm and 900mm from the ground.
-
- Two red reflectors at the rear. Different minimum and maximum heights apply to these. Indeed, at the rear, they must be a minimum of 350mm from the ground and a maximum of 1500mm.
In addition to the reflectors , there are also other regulations governing the lighting on a trailer.
Shapes of retroreflectors
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, TRALERT®’s retroreflectors are also available in various shapes. In some locations on your vehicle, a specific shape is mandatory. For example, the triangular shape is mandatory on the rear of a trailer.
Round reflector
TRALERT® has several round reflectors in our stock. This shape is available in all the colours mentioned above. Each colour has two variants that can be attached in two ways. More information on this will follow later.
Rectangular reflector
In addition to the round shape, rectangular retroreflectors are also available. Like the round ones, the rectangular reflectors are available in all three colours. They are also available in different variants.
Triangular reflector
The triangular reflectors are not available in all colours. In fact, they are only available in red.
Mounting a reflector on your vehicle
TRALERT® reflectors can be attached in two ways. Except the triangular ones, these only one way. All other shapes and colours in any combination are available in two different fixing options.
Adhesive strip fastening
The first way of attaching them is by means of an adhesive strip. As the name suggests, these reflectors must be stuck to the vehicle. A 3M adhesive strip is attached to the back of the reflectors. With the adhesive strip, you literally stick the reflector to the vehicle. The triangular reflectors are not available with adhesive strip.
Screw mounting
The other way of fixing is by means of screws. The reflectors are provided with holes, which allow you to fix them by using two screws. The triangular reflectors are only available with screw mounting.
Format
All reflectors in the TRALERT® product range have a standard format. The standard size of round reflectors with an adhesive strip is ø60 x 5.5mm. The standard size of round reflectors with screw mounting is ø78 x 5.5mm. All rectangular reflectors, regardless of the mounting method, are 90 x 40mm. The triangular reflectors are 158 x 158mm.
Vehicles
A reflector from TRALERT® can be used for different vehicles. Each vehicle has its own laws and rules when it comes to reflectors. For some vehicles a reflector is mandatory, so pay attention to this.
Trailer reflectors
To comply with regulations, a trailer up to and including the maximum authorised mass of 750 kg must be fitted with the following reflectors. The required reflectors for a trailer are as follows. Firstly, the trailer must be fitted with two triangular red retroreflectors at the rear of the vehicle. Furthermore, the trailer must be fitted with two white retroreflectors at the front of the trailer. In addition to the front and rear of the vehicle, the trailer must be fitted with non-triangular amber coloured retroreflector on each side of the vehicle. In short, your trailer must be fitted with red, white and orange retroreflectors.
Car reflectors
According to the MOT inspection requirements, a car must have several retroreflectors. If your car does not have a retroreflector, it will be rejected. A retroreflector on a car has the function of reflecting light. This makes the car more noticeable, for example when weather conditions are bad. If a reflector on your car is broken or missing, it is wise to replace it.
Certificates
Of course there are rules and requirements for a reflector. Every reflector in the TRALERT® product range is equipped with the necessary certificates. So there is no need to worry about that.
Reflectors MOT
For the reflector apk inspection of a car, there may be two red retroreflectors at the rear of the vehicle. In addition, there may be amber reflectors on each side of the vehicle. if the vehicle is longer than 6 metres. The rear reflector on the side may then also be red.

Is a retroreflector the same as a normal reflector?
A retroreflector is nothing more than a reflector that ensures light is reflected in the same direction. In traffic, this is extremely important. When a motorist shines light on a reflector, the light must of course be reflected back in the motorist's direction. The reflectors used along the road on bollards on the verge or on the clothing of road workers are all retroreflectors.
