ADR Lighting regulations 2026 | essential requirements and installation checklist

Content

When transporting hazardous goods, safety is everything. Not only the load, but also the vehicle must comply with strict requirements. An important part of this is ADR lighting. But what exactly does the ADR lighting regulations 2025 mean for you as a manufacturer, surface mounting manufacturer or technician in vehicle technology?

In this article, you will read:

  • What ADR lighting is and which rules apply in 2025
  • How to install lighting correctly according to ADR 9.2
  • Which ADR-approved lighting fits FL, AT and EX vehicles
  • Which products are suitable for use under ADR
* Example of a popular flood beam ADR work light with 4100 lumens and the highest IP rating (IP69K).

What requirements does lighting have to meet according to ADR legislation?

Chapter 9.2 of the ADR legislation sets requirements for the electrical installation of vehicles transporting dangerous goods. Lighting is part of this. Not as an individually approved product, but as part of a safe installation.

Among other things, you should consider:

During ADR inspections, extra strict attention is paid to cable routing, connectors and individual fuses. An incorrect connection can lead to rejection of the entire vehicle even if the correct luminaire has been used.

How to correctly install ADR-approved lighting

Correct installation is just as important as the right product selection. Below are the most important points for lighting in bodybuilding.

Use suitable cabling

Cables must be resistant to heat, vibration and aggressive substances. Use high-quality connectors such as Deutsch or AMP Connector SuperSeal to ensure a water- and dust-proof connection. These connectors are designed for the harsh conditions ADR vehicles often operate in.

Work with shielded connections

Use high-quality connectors such as Deutsch or AMP Connector SuperSeal to ensure a water- and dust-tight connection. These connectors are designed for vehicles exposed to vibration, moisture, brine, oil and temperature fluctuations. The conditions ADR vehicles often operate in.

Note IP value and ECE R10 approval

The minimum IP value is IP67. For tankers or vehicles cleaned with high pressure, IP69K is recommended. Any light on an ADR vehicle must comply with ECE R10.

Mounting vibration-proof and safe

Cables must be tightly attached, without risk of damage or loosening. Use vibration-resistant clips and avoid sharp edges.

Lighting per type of ADR vehicle

FL vehicles

For vehicles transporting liquids, IP69K is a must. Work lights and marker lights must be resistant to moisture, vapour and high-pressure cleaning.

AT vehicles

AT vehicles transport gases and chemical substances. Lighting must be resistant to corrosion and have increased EMC protection.

EX/II and EX/III vehicles

In vehicles for hazardous materials, ATEX- or IECEx-certified lighting is mandatory. Pay close attention to the zone classification (zone 1 or 2).

Checklist when installing ADR lighting

Lighting itself does not receive ADR certification. However, the entire vehicle, including installation, must meet the requirements. Pay attention to these critical points:

  • IP67 or higher(IP69K recommended)
  • ECE R10 (EMC) mandatory
  • ECE R148 mandatory for rear/brake/directional lights
  • ATEX mandatory for EX vehicles (Zone 1 or 2)
  • Each light fused separately
  • Wear-resistant cables and solid connectors (Deutsch)
  • No open wires or temporary connections

IP69K is not technically mandatory under ADR, but is highly recommended in many situations, especially for FL vehicles and high-pressure cleaning vehicles. It offers extra security and is often adopted as standard in professional applications.

Marker lights when ADR vehicles are stationary

According to ADR regulations, hazard markings must be permanently visible as long as the vehicle is loaded with hazardous materials. Although the law does not explicitly require marker lights to remain on when stationary, in many countries the rule is that the vehicle must remain sufficiently visible in the dark.

In ADR vehicle construction, it is an important best practice to have marker lights on even when stationary. It increases safety and is often demanded by inspectors.

Frequently asked questions

Is a light ADR-certified?

No. ADR does not approve individual products. Lighting must be suitable for use within an ADR-approved vehicle and installed correctly.

Do all luminaires require EMC approval?

Yes. According to ADR 9.2.2.5, all electrical equipment on the vehicle must be EMC-compatible. ECE R10 is therefore mandatory.

What is the difference between ADR and ATEX?

ADR regulates the transport of hazardous substances. ATEX is about explosion protection of components. In EX vehicles, you usually need both.
