White reflectors at the front of the trailer

You are obliged to fit two white reflectors at the front of the vehicle. The compulsory colour of the reflectors on the front is white and the number of reflectors to be fitted is two. It is also important that the shape of the white reflectors on the trailer is not triangular, as this type of reflector is only permitted on the rear of the trailer.

When fitting white reflectors to your vehicle, the following is important. The installation height of the reflectors at the front must be at least 250 mm and no more than 900 mm (with the exception of the 1500 mm). The distance between the two reflectors must be at least 600mm and no more than 1500mm. For trailers with a length of 1300 mm, a minimum of 400 mm applies.

Amber reflectors on trailers

Amber side reflectors are compulsory for all trailers. The trailer must be fitted with at least one amber reflector per side. Every trailer must therefore have at least two amber reflectors. These must be positioned in the middle 30% of the surface. The compulsory colour of reflectors on the sides is orange/yellow.

When fitting amber reflectors on trailers, it is important to take the following into account. The installation height of the side reflectors must be at least 250 mm and no more than 900 mm (with the exception of the 1500 mm). With regard to the distribution between the various reflectors, it is important that there is no more than 3 metres between them. If you have a larger vehicle, in some cases it is necessary to place several reflectors on the side.

Red rear reflectors

It is compulsory to have two red reflectors at the rear of the trailer. These must be placed at a minimum height of 350 mm and a maximum of 1500 mm. When two rear lights are placed, an exception of 2100 mm applies. When installing additional rear lights, an installation height of 600mm above the mandatory rear lights applies.

The following applies to the distribution at the rear. The reflectors may be placed a maximum of 400mm from the furthest point of the vehicle width. This does not apply to the additional rear lights. There must be a minimum of 600 mm between the two rear lights. Furthermore, when the vehicle is smaller than 1300mm, a minimum of 400mm applies.

Easy to mount

TRALERT® reflectors can be mounted in two different ways. The first way is to use a 3m adhesive strip. The reflectors to be stuck on your trailer are fitted with a sturdy 3 m adhesive strip. You don't have to worry about the strip coming off. The other way is by means of screw fixing. All non-triangular reflectors can also be attached with two screws. There are holes in the reflector so that fixing is very easy.

Is a retroreflector the same as a normal reflector?

Not every reflector is a retroreflector. A retro reflector is a type of reflector that ensures that the light is reflected in the direction from which it came. Reflectors used in traffic are always retroreflectors. When a vehicle shines light on a reflector, that light must be reflected back in the same direction, otherwise the reflector is still not visible. So a retroreflector ensures that you are properly visible.

All TRALERT® reflectors are retroreflectors. So they are suitable for participating in traffic.

Trailer lighting

In addition to the reflectors that are compulsory on a trailer, lighting is also compulsory. Every trailer must be fitted with at least two rear lights and two direction indicators. The direction indicators can also be flashing hazard lights or marker lights. The trailer must also be equipped with two brake lights and at least one fog light. If you have a large trailer, it will also have two parking lights. This applies to trailers wider than 1.60 metres. Finally, the trailer must have licence plate lighting, just like any other vehicle.

TRALERT® has a wide range of products. You can equip your entire trailer with TRALERT® lighting. See our range of LED trailer lights here.
