What is a SuperSeal AMP connector?

A Superseal plug (or Superseal connector) is a compact waterproof automotive connector widely used in vehicle electrical systems. The connector has been developed for applications where reliability is essential, such as vehicle lighting, wiring harnesses and electrical components in trucks, semi-trailers and work vehicles.

Thanks to seals, crimp contacts and a mechanical locking mechanism, the electrical connection remains protected from moisture, dirt, vibrations and temperature fluctuations. This ensures a stable and durable connection, even under harsh conditions.

What is a Superseal connector / Superseal connector?

A SuperSeal connector is a water- and dust-tight connector originally developed by TE Connectivity for automotive applications. The connector is designed to provide reliable electrical connections in environments where moisture, dirt and vibration are a factor.

The best-known version is the AMP SuperSeal series, of which variants such as the 1.5 series are widely used in automotive systems. These connectors typically meet IP67 according to IEC 60529, protecting them against dust and temporary immersion in water.

The use of rubber seals, crimp contacts and a locking mechanism keeps the electrical connection functioning reliably in demanding conditions.

What is a SuperSeal connector used for?

SuperSeal connectors are used in electrical systems where a waterproof and vibration-resistant connection is important. This is particularly essential in vehicle lighting, as these components are often exposed to rain, splashing water, mud and temperature fluctuations.

In practice, you often see a SuperSeal connector in 24V lighting systems of trucks and semi-trailers, where reliable electrical connections are necessary. But also in lighting in bodybuilding.

Why are SuperSeal connectors waterproof?

The waterproof features of a SuperSeal connector are achieved through a combination of different construction elements.

Key components are:

  • Rubber seals (wire seals) that prevent moisture from penetrating along the cable
  • Crimp contacts that ensure stable and low electrical resistance
  • Locking mechanisms that prevent the connector from loosening due to vibration

This construction keeps the electrical connection protected from:

  • moisture and rain
  • dust and dirt
  • corrosion
  • mechanical vibrations

What variants of SuperSeal connectors exist?

  • 2-PIN connectors - for simple lighting connections
  • 3-PIN connectors - for lighting with multiple functions
  • 4-PIN connectors - for extended LED modules or combined functions

These connectors typically consist of a male (plug) and female (receptacle) side that snap together and are mechanically locked.

Within vehicle installations, SuperSeal connectors are often used in:

  • wiring harnesses
  • extension cables
  • plug-&-play lighting sets

This allows components to be easily connected or replaced without soldering.

How do you assemble a SuperSeal connector?

The mounting of a SuperSeal connector is relatively simple and widely used in wiring harness construction and vehicle assembly.

The basic steps are:

  1. Strip the cable according to the prescribed length.
  2. Slide the rubber seal over the wire.
  3. Crimp the contact on the cable with suitable crimping tools.
  4. Click the contact into the connector housing until it clicks into place.
  5. Lock the connector with the available lock or clip construction.
  6. Connect the male and female connector until you hear a clear click.

When a SuperSeal connector is fitted correctly, it creates a reliable and waterproof connection that can withstand long-term loading.
