The ECE R2 standardisation (originally for low beam lights) has now been merged into the modern ECE R149 and R48. Dimming lights, also known as low beam or passing beam, are intended to illuminate the road directly in front of the vehicle without blinding other road users. These standards still ensure the performance and safety of low beam lights, especially while driving in bad weather or at night.

The importance of low beam lights

Low-beam lights play a crucial role in road safety. They ensure that drivers have sufficient visibility on the road while preventing glare from oncoming traffic. ECE R2 (now R149 + R48) specifications

The original ECE R2 determined the specifications for low beam dimming lights with bulbs. Today, these requirements apply via ECE R149 and ECE R48, including colour, light intensity and positioning. The main specifications are:

  • Colour: dimming lights must emit a white light with strict CIE chromaticity coordinates (yellow is no longer permitted for dimming lights).
  • intensity: sufficient light intensity to illuminate the road properly, but within the photometric limits of R149 to avoid glare.
  • placement: dimming lights must be mounted at a specific height and angle according to ECE R48.
