ECE R112

Content

ECE R112 establishes a worldwide directive defining requirements for the approval of head lamps and supplementary lights for vehicles. The aim of this regulation is to improve road safety by ensuring consistent and reliable street lighting.

What is ECE R112 for?

Headlights and supplementary lights that comply with ECE R112 standards undergo stringent tests. These tests guarantee that the lighting is clear and stable, without blinding other road users. This means that, as a driver, you have an improved view of the road and can recognise obstacles in time.

What E numbers do headlights need?

  • E-Marking: This consists of a circle with the letter "E" and a number. The number indicates the country of approval. View the E-mark numbers per country here
  • C: Indicates that the light is approved for low beam (passing beam).
  • R: Indicates that the light is suitable for high beam driving beam).

What exactly does ECE certified mean?

Next to the E mark is an approval number, which confirms that the light meets ECE R112 requirements. This number usually starts with two digits representing the latest technical changes.

Approval of supplementary lights

Additional lights such as headlights and driving lights must comply with ECE R112 standards. This means they must have an approval with the E-mark and approval number. By paying attention to these markings, you can ensure that a headlight or supplementary light meets ECE R112 standards, ensuring safe and reliable lighting.

Update: ECE R149 replaces the ECE R112 regulation

Since 14 November 2021, ECE R149 has completely replaced R112 for new certifications. This new regulation also replaces the previous ECE R123 and R119 and brings with it improved requirements for the approval of high and low beam (Adaptive Front Lighting Systems - AFS). These requirements focus on optimising the performance of headlights under different driving conditions, such as cornering and weather conditions.

Existing ECE R112 certificates for products certified before the expiry date remain valid. New products, however, must comply with ECE R149 requirements. This streamlining of regulations increases road safety and provides more clarity for manufacturers.

What about TRALERT® headlights, driving lights and light bars?

Our latest additional headlights, 12v driving lights and the LED bar car at TRALERT® already comply with ECE R149 regulations and are thus fully approved according to the latest legal requirements. These new regulations replace ECE R112, R123 and R119 and set stricter performance requirements for high and low beam lights. Thanks to ECE R149 certification, our products offer optimal lighting and visibility under various driving conditions, ensuring both your safety and compliance with the latest international standards.
