What is contour lighting?

Definition

Contour lights are a type of lighting that creates an outline around an object. They are often used on vehicles such as trailers and trucks to make them visible to other drivers at night. This type of lighting usually consists of LED lights mounted along the edge of the vehicle. Contour lights can be used for both safety and design purposes. In many cases, you’ll see them in the shape of LED marker lights, such as side marker lights.

LED contour lights

LED lighting has become indispensable when it comes to safety. We therefore see it frequently used in contour lights on trucks, box trucks and trailers. LED lamps provide clear lighting, making your vehicle more visible in low-light conditions. These lamps are usually waterproof and are ideal for outdoor use. They also consume less energy than other types of lighting, making them more cost-effective in the long term.

practical examples

We often see contour lights on large trailers over 6 metres in length, as these can sometimes be difficult to see in the dark. This can have serious consequences. Trucks and box lorries also feature this type of marking. It is also a type of lighting widely used on motorhomes and caravans. Here too, they usually take the shape of LED lights fitted to the edge of the caravan or motorhome to provide clear, bright lighting. This makes your caravan or motorhome more visible in the dark. Furthermore, contour lights are available in various colours and styles, so you can always find the right light for your vehicle. LED lighting is cheaper for caravans in the long run because it is more energy-efficient than other types of lighting.

Obligation of contour lights

If the vehicle was first registered after 31 December 1997 and is more than 2.10 m wide or more than 6.00 m long, two front lights and contour lights in the shape of rear marker lights must be visible. If the vehicle was first put into service after 1 January 1998 and is more than 2.60 m wide, side marker lights must also be fitted (source: RDW). In Europe, it is also compulsory for vehicles weighing 7.5 tonnes and trailers weighing 3.5 tonnes to have contour markings using retro-reflective tape.
