TRALERT® supplies high-quality, ECE-certified LED bars for trucks, commercial vehicles, 4×4 vehicles, construction machinery and earth-moving vehicles. The range extends from a small 23 cm LED bar to LED bars measuring almost 130 cm, such as the LD9 Stratos with 25,000 lumen.
An ‘ LED bar ’, also known as an LED bar, LED bar, ‘ lightbar ’ or LED ‘ light bar ’, combines a wide light image with a long range. This allows you to achieve plenty of light with a single unit, a single cable set and a compact mounting solution. You can choose the right model based on light image, length, light output and mounting position.
LED bars for trucks and commercial vehicles
For trucks, the mounting position largely determines which LED bar is suitable. In the grille, you often opt for a slim design with a limited height. On a roof spoiler or light bar, length, range and secure mounting play a greater role. An additional light bar at the rear of the cab may also be desirable for trucks. For commercial vehicles, appearance is just as important as light output: a slim LED bar fitted in the grille remains virtually invisible during the day and significantly improves visibility at night.
TRALERT® supplies certified models with the relevant ECE approvals, including ECE R10 for electromagnetic compatibility and ECE R149 for use as a main beam function. For applications involving moisture, dust, vibrations or intensive cleaning, you will find models with a high degree of protection, such as IP68 and IP69K.
LED bars for 4×4 and off-road vehicles
The emphasis here is on mechanical durability and protection against water and dust. Ensure the unit has a robust housing, a sturdy mounting bracket and an appropriate IP rating. Opt for IP68 as a minimum, but preferably IP69K. This means that the LED bar can withstand high-pressure washers (hot water and high pressure), which is essential when washing the truck. Housing and Lens: Look for a housing made of powder-coated aluminium and a lens made of shatterproof polycarbonate. This prevents damage from stone chips and corrosion caused by road salt.
LED bars for construction machinery and earth-moving vehicles
For wheel loaders, excavators, shovels and other heavy machinery, the ‘ LED bar ’ primarily provides a wide light image in front of the machine. This can be achieved with a single wide-beam unit or with several ‘ LED bars ’ mounted side by side, depending on the available mounting space. For long-range visibility, combine the LED bar with headlights or driving lights, and for the area to the side and behind the machine, use LED work lights. It is precisely this combination that provides a comprehensive lighting solution.
A real-world example is a Komatsu wheel loader fitted with a complete lighting package by TRALERT®: OZZ XH1 LED headlights at the front, combined with a Stratos LED bar with a light output of up to 19,400 lumen and a built-in ECE R65 warning light function.
Other key features include a robust housing, good vibration resistance and a mounting position that ensures the light image matches the working area without causing any annoying reflections.
How many ‘ LED bars ’ are permitted?
An ‘ LED bar ’ used as a driving light on public roads must be approved in accordance with UN R149 and is therefore subject to the regulations governing high beams. According to UN R48, two or four high beam functions are permitted in principle, with additional options available for certain vehicles in category N3. The number is therefore not counted in terms of ‘ LED bars ’, but in terms of ‘high-beam functions’ and the combined reference value.
The reference value for simultaneously activatable high-beam functions must not exceed 100, which corresponds to a maximum of 430,000 candela. You should therefore check the reference number of both the existing lighting and the new LED bar before mounting, and take into account the applicable national regulations for vehicle lighting.
Which LED bar is right for your application?
Start with the desired light image. This often says more about practical performance than just the number of lumen. A driving beam projects light in a focused beam far ahead, a flood beam mainly illuminates the area immediately around the vehicle, and a combi beam combines both. Two LED bars with the same number of lumen may therefore perform very differently in practice. A separate driving light focuses more on long-range light, meaning that both solutions complement each other well.
Also consider effective light output, range and construction. A double row of LEDs typically provides more light within the same length, whilst a single row offers a lower profile for compact mounting spaces. Common lengths are around 50 cm and 80 cm for the grille or bumper, and 1 metre or more for roof spoilers and light bars. Always measure the available space, including mounting brackets and cable routing.
LED bars for 12V, 24V and multi-voltage
Many multi-voltage models operate at 9–36V and are therefore suitable for both 12V and 24V systems. This is practical for mixed fleets comprising commercial vehicles, trucks and construction machinery, as you can use the same series across multiple vehicle types.
Also bear in mind cable length, power consumption, fuse rating and connector type. The current draw determines the cable thickness and the fuse, and high- LED bars relays are usually used to switch the connection. For vehicles with a CAN-bus, the electrical connection requires extra attention; ECE R10 applies for electromagnetic compatibility.
LED bars with position lights and warning light functions
Various TRALERT® LED bars combine driving lights with integrated position or daytime running lights, meaning you need fewer separate units, cables and mounting parts. Various series feature duo-color lighting in white and amber and feature a dynamic start-up sequence. If you wish to use the integrated function officially as position lights or daytime running lights, a version with ECE R148 approval is required.
For work vehicles and specialised equipment, there are LED bars with an integrated amber coloured warning light function, which combines powerful driving lights and warning signals in a single unit. If the warning light function is used as official warning lighting, choose a version with ECE R65 approval and observe the regulations governing mounting and use.
