Choosing the right LED lightbar - TRALERT® Selection Guide

Content

How do you choose the best LED lightbar for your application?

To answer this question, we have put together a complete guide. We cover everything that matters when choosing an LED lightbar. Whether it is for on trucks, commercial vehicles or special vehicles. We will help you get started so you know which lightbar is the best choice for you.

In this blog you will read:

  • What the differences are between the lightbars you can choose from
  • Which type of lightbar is most suitable based on vehicle type
  • Which lightbar is the most powerful and which has the most functions
  • Explanation of light image, IP value, certification and regulations

Quick overview of the different lightbars

TRALERT® offers four premium series: Nemesis (LD6), Nemesis XL (LD7), Vulcan (LD8) and Stratos (LD9).

LED lightbars TRALERT®
  • Nemesis (LD6): A beautiful and affordable model with a single row of LEDs and dynamic DRL start-up for a premium, eye-catching look. Max lumen (raw): up to 15,120 lumen (largest model: 1,000 mm).
Check out all the pluses of the Nemesis.
  • Nemesis XL (LD7): The strong brother of the Nemesis with a double row of LEDs for double light power and maximum range in tough conditions. Max lumen (raw): up to 30,240 lumen (largest model: 1,000 mm).
Check out all the pluses of the Nemesis XL.
  • Vulcan (LD8): A discreet lightbar - ultra-slim (only 33 mm high) with full glow effect across the entire lens. Max lumen (raw): up to 19,400 lumen (largest model: 1020 mm).
    See all the Vulcan's pluses.
  • Stratos (LD9): The all-in-one model with built-in R65 warning lights, amber or amber DRL - multifunctional and synchronisable. Max lumen (raw): up to 25,500 lumen (largest model: 1270 mm).
    See all the Stratos' pluses.

All series have IP69K (dust and water resistant), multivoltage and ECE certification.

How to choose the right LED lightbar?

The right choice depends on your vehicle, application, desired functions and mounting location. All TRALERT® bars have a driving beam, which means they are certified under ECE R149 as additional high beam. And the lightbars also all have duo-color position lights (DRL) in amber and IP69K certification.

But each series excels in something unique, such as dynamic animation, extra power or a built-in warning light.

Key selection factors:

  • Features: Do you want an eye-catching dynamic start-up (Nemesis/Nemesis XL), full glow effect over the lens (Vulcan), or a built-in R65 warning light with synchronisation (Stratos)?
  • Light output & range: For maximum power and distance, choose Nemesis XL (up to 30,240 lumen). For balance with style: Nemesis or Vulcan. Stratos offers high output plus warning function.
  • Conditions: All bars are IP69K (dust and high-pressure water resistant). Nemesis XL is extra robust for extremely rough terrain (construction, off-road).
  • Mounting & flush mounting: Standard side mounting or rear mounting. For tight spots such as grills: Vulcan (only 33 mm high). For roof or bumper: Stratos or Nemesis XL. Flush mounting (e.g. in bumpers): Nemesis XL.

Practical examples
:

  • Truck/transport: Choose Stratos (especially the 1270 mm in RA variant) for rear with amber position lights and warning lights - ensures legal warning, uniform front/rear styling and maximum safety on the road.
  • Construction vehicles & heavy equipment: go for Nemesis XL - double row LEDs give brutal power and wide scene lighting, perfect in dust, mud and night work.
  • Discreet in the grill of a commercial vehicle or pick-up: Vulcan - ultra-slim with glow DRL, looks premium without standing out.
  • Stylish upgrade on truck or 4×4: Nemesis - dynamic DRL start-up makes the vehicle really striking and modern.

What is the most powerful lightbar?

The most powerful lightbar in the current TRALERT® range is the Nemesis XL 1000 (item LD7-360302). This is the largest model in the Nemesis XL series (double row of LEDs), with an impressive light output of 30,240 lumen (raw) and an extremely far range.

Why is this the most powerful?

  • Light output: Up to 30,240 lumen - double that of the single-row Nemesis series and significantly more than the Vulcan or Stratos at comparable lengths.
  • Range: 100 lux at 90 metres and still 1 lux at 900 metres - ideal for situations where you need to see far ahead, such as high speeds on off-road terrain, night transport in dark areas or heavy construction operations.
  • Double row of LEDs (72 x 5W).
  • Wattage: 360 W.
  • Power consumption: 30 A at 12V / 15 A at 24V.
  • Dimensions: approx. 1041 x 62.5 x 70.1 mm.
  • Driving beam pattern: intense core for distance + wide spread for near.
  • IP69K, ECE R10/R149-certified, 2-year warranty.

This bar is made for extreme off-road, heavy-duty applications, excavators, large semi-trailers or vehicles operating in complete darkness - where every extra metre of visibility counts. It delivers brute power without sacrificing the stylish dynamic DRL start-up (amber, left-to-right animation) that characterises the entire Nemesis family.

If you need maximum light power (e.g. for construction sites, mining, long-distance transport or night rescue work), the Nemesis XL 1000 is the absolute best at the moment. For lighter applications, a smaller model from the same series is often sufficient (e.g. Nemesis XL 790 with 22,680 lumen).

Best choice lightbar for in the grill of a commercial vehicle

For mounting in the grill of a commercial vehicle, van or pick-up, the Vulcan Series (LD8) is the absolute top choice - especially the smaller models such as Vulcan 290(LD8-5449) or Vulcan 530(LD8-11096). These bars are specially designed for tight, visible areas where discretion and style are paramount.

Why Vulcan is an excellent option for flush mounting in the grill:

  • Ultra-slim design: only 33 mm high - it fits effortlessly into the narrow spaces of modern grills without the need to modify the bumper or grille.
  • Unique glow effect: The entire lens lights up in white or amber DRL (position lights) - no separate strip, but a sleek, premium glow that fills the entire bar. This gives a modern, high-end look without being overpowering.
  • Light output: Up to 19,400 lumen (raw) in the largest model, but the 290 and 530 already deliver 4,900-9,600 lumen - more than enough for position lights, additional spot/flood and safe night driving.
  • Practical benefits: IP69K (resistant to dirt, water and high-pressure cleaning), ECE R10/R148/R149-certified (fully legal on the road), Deutsch-connector and 300 cm cable for easy installation. The glow DRL is dynamic and energy-efficient.
  • Ease of mounting: included supports for bottom and rear mounting - ideal for grill without drilling or major modifications.

This bar is perfect for transport companies, couriers, construction companies or fleet vehicles that want a clean, professional look without eye-catching extras. It looks like original factory lighting, but delivers much more light than standard DRL.

What is the best lightbar for in the grill of a truck?

For flush mounting in a truck's grill (e.g. in the bumper or grille openings), the Nemesis XL Series (LD7) is the best option - especially the Nemesis XL 530(LD7-180151) or Nemesis XL 790(LD7-270226) models. These bars combine brute force with robustness, ideal for heavy trucks where you not only want style, but above all maximum light output and durability.

Why Nemesis XL excels for truck grill ush mounting:

  • Double row of LEDs: For double light power - up to 30,240 lumen (raw) in the largest model, with excellent range (up to 900 m at 1 lux). This gives superior visibility when transporting at night, loading/unloading or manoeuvring in dark docks.
  • Robust and durable: Higher housing (62.5 mm) with aluminium ADC12 and polycarbonate lens - resistant to vibrations, impacts and extreme weather conditions. IP69K and ECE R10/R149 certified.
  • Dynamic DRL: Same left-to-right start-up as the Nemesis series - gives a premium, professional look to match modern trucks.
  • Mounting in grill: The 530 mm (approx. 537 mm) or 790 mm (approx. 789.5 mm) lengths fit well in wider truck grills or bumper openings. With the standard brackets and long cable (300 cm), flush mounting is easy, even in tight spaces.
  • Why not Vulcan here? Vulcan is slimmer and more discreet (ideal for smaller commercial vehicles), but for a full truck with heavy demands (more lumen, wider range, more robust construction) Nemesis XL wins on power and durability.

In short: for a truck grill, choose Nemesis XL if you want maximum light and robustness - perfect for long trips, off-road sections or work in the dark. For pure discreet and stylish: Vulcan. For warning lights: Stratos.

What is the best lightbar for a truck?

For trucks(trucks, semi-trailers, semi-trailers), the Stratos 1270 (item LD9-1130RA or LD9-1130WA) is the best all-round choice. Mainly because of its combination of high light output, multifunctional warning and legal front/rear styling.

Why is it the best for trucks?

  • Light output: Up to 25,500 lumen (raw) - ample for safe night driving, loading/unloading or manoeuvring in dark docks/terrain areas.
  • Range: 105 lux at 50 metres and another 1 lux at 689 metres - excellent forward visibility even at high speeds.

Unique features
:

  • Built-in R65-certified warning lights(amber) for additional warning (legal for roadwork, breakdown or special transports).
  • Duo colour DRL: amber (RA variant) for rear (red as rear lights, amber as indicators) and amber (WA variant) for front - ensures uniform, professional appearance across the entire vehicle.
  • Synchronisable: Multiple Stratos bars can be linked so that the warning lights work in perfect synchronisation (useful for multiple bars on one semi-trailer truck).
  • Length 1270 mm - fits perfectly on roofs, bumpers or along the side.
  • Wattage 130 W, multivoltage 10-30 V, IP69K (resistant to high-pressure cleaning and dirt).
  • ECE R10/R148/R149/R65-certified - fully legal on public roads.
  • 3-year warranty.

The Vulcan excels in discretion and style: at only 33 mm high, it is the slimmest in the range and fits effortlessly into tight grills or bumpers. The unique glow effect illuminates the entire lens in amber - no separate strip, but a sleek, premium look that looks like original factory lighting.

Plus points:

  • Ultra-slim (33 mm high) - perfect for flush mounting without modifications.
  • Full glow DRL all over the lens - modern, unobtrusive and stylish.
  • Good light output (up to 19,400 lumen raw in the 1020 mm model) with range up to ~762 m at 1 lux.
  • IP69K, ECE R10/R148/R149 (DRL certified), 2-year warranty.
  • Energy-efficient and easy to install - ideal for fleet and daily use.

Perfect for
:

  • Commercial vehicles, pick-ups and trucks where discretion counts (grill or bumper flush mounting).
  • Vehicles that want a clean, professional look without eye-catching extras.
  • Daily transport or urban use where style and unobtrusiveness are more important than maximum power.

Stratos Series

The Stratos is the most versatile model: a output driving beam (up to 25,500 lumen raw in the 1270 mm model), built-in R65-certified warning lights as well as amber (RA) or amber (WA) DRL. It is synchronisable (multiple bars flashing in sync) and offers uniform front/rear styling.

Plus points:

  • Built-in R65 warning light + synchronisation - legal warning light(amber).
  • amber (RA) for rear (red rear position, amber warning lights/flashing) and amber (WA) for front - uniform look.
  • High lumen and range (up to ~689 m at 1 lux in the top model).
  • IP69K, ECE R10/R148/R149/R65, 3-year warranty.
  • Multifunctional: driving beam + DRL + warning lights in one bar - saves space and installation time.

Perfect for:

  • Transport, trucks and semi-trailers where warning and visibility are crucial (road work, towing, loading/unloading).
  • Front and rear-mounted vehicles for uniform styling (white front, amber rear).
  • Special applications where warning lights are legally required (R65 approved).

IP value and certifications of TRALERT® lightbars?

All TRALERT® lightbars (Nemesis, Nemesis XL, Vulcan and Stratos) are equipped with IP69K - the highest protection class currently available. This means:

  • Completely dust-proof
  • Resistant to high-pressure and high-temperature water jets (up to 80-100 bar and 80°C) from all directions, including steam cleaning and industrial high-pressure sprayers.
  • Perfectly suited for tough conditions such as construction sites (mud, dust, high-pressure cleaning), agricultural (mud, manure, rain), transport (road dirt, salt, rain) and off-road (water puddles, mud baths).

IP69K goes beyond IP67 (immersion) or IP68 (long-term submersion) - it is specifically tested for extreme industrial cleaning, so is ideal for vehicles that are frequently cleaned or run in dirty environments.

Certifications (all series comply unless otherwise stated):

  • ECE R10: ECE certification (electromagnetic compatibility) - ensures that the lightbar bar does not cause interference in on-board electronics (radio, navigation, CAN-bus) and is itself not susceptible to interference. Essential for modern trucks and commercial vehicles. All about ECE R10
  • ECE R148 / R149: Road-legal driving lights (driving lights) - these bars may be used as additional high beam or position lights on public roads, provided they are correctly fitted and do not dazzle. R148 applies to signal lights, R149 to main lights.
  • ECE R65 (Stratos Series only): Specifically for warning lights/flashes - class 1 or 2, with 360° visibility from 20 metres. This makes the warning light legal for special applications (road work, towing, breakdown assistance). Other series have no warning lights, so no R65 required. More about ece r65 lighting.

These certifications (plus CE marking) guarantee that the bars are reliable, safe and legal on European public roads - no risk of rejection at MOT or inspection.

Legislation and regulations for lightbars in the Netherlands and Europe

The rules for additional LED lightbars (driving lights) can be found in the European ECE regulations (UNECE).

Key points for legal installation and use:

  • ECE approval mandatory on public roads Additional lightbars with driving beam function must be ECE R149-approved(since 2021/2022 the standard for main lighting/extra high beam). For position lights (DRL), ECE R148 often applies. Without a valid E-mark (E + line number + approval number), use on public roads is prohibited. TRALERT® lightbars comply with this (R149/R148/R10).
  • Warning lights / flashers (amber) Amber warning lights (R65-certified) are only permitted for specific vehicles and situations: emergency services, road works, salvage/towing, exceptional transport or special permits. General vehicles are not allowed to use permanent warning lights on the road.
  • Off-road and work lights Pure work lights (flood/scene beam) may be used freely off-road, on private property (construction site, yard, grounds) or when the vehicle is stationary. On public roads, additional lighting should be switched off or dimmed if it hinders or blinds other road users.
  • Mounting and operating requirements Mounting must be safe and vibration-free, without loose cables or distractions. Lights must not dazzle (same as standard high beam). Read more about installation of vehicle lighting in the article on ece-r48
