EMC interference suppression

What is EMC interference suppression?

When LED lighting is connected, other electrical devices in the vicinity may start to experience interference. Think, for example, of the vehicle’s radio. If this problem occurs, the lighting is not fitted with the correct EMC interference suppression. The problem is quite common, so there are plenty of ways to resolve it. To check whether a light has EMC interference suppression, you can look for various certificates. Incidentally, these rules do not apply solely to lighting as we know it, such as 24 V semi-trailer lighting or vehicle bodywork. All electronic devices must have EMC interference suppressed – from lighting to radios to microwaves. Failure to do so can be harmful to public health.

What does EMC stand for?

EMC stands for Electromagnetic Compatibility. When lighting is equipped with proper EMC interference suppression, it cannot cause interference to other nearby devices. But that is not the only thing. It also means that the lighting itself is not susceptible to interference. In other words, with the right certification, you can generally go out interference-free.

How to recognise it?

How do you know whether lighting meets the correct certificates? When it comes to EMC interference suppression, you should look for the ECE-R10 certificate. This certificate indicates that the light has been fully EMC-tested. It is important to note that there are different levels of EMC interference suppression. This means there are also differences between individual products. In addition to the specific ECE-R10 certificate, you should also look out for the CE marking. The requirements for the CE mark include an assessment of electromagnetic compatibility.

These are the labels to look out for when it comes to interference with nearby devices or with the lighting itself. Before a light gets a certain quality mark, it must first have been tested extensively. Without proper testing, a light cannot have a hallmark. All quality marks can be found in the specifications of the different types of LED lighting. If you still have questions about the certificates of a particular light, you can always contact us.

Trucks and semi-trailers

EMC interference suppression is also a frequent requirement in the lighting regulations for trucks, semi-trailers and heavy trailers.
