What to pay attention to when mounting your work lights

The short answer
Customers of our dealers often wonder what to look out for when mounting LED work lights. Naturally, we understand that correctly connecting and adjusting your work lights is a specialist skill. That’s why we’re happy to explain what you need to bear in mind and why a uniform (LED) lighting system is invaluable on your tractor unit. Working safely starts with good visibility.
A non-uniformly lighted working environment brings unsafe situations
The following image shows an example of LED work lights being mounted incorrectly, compared to a well-lit worksite. The LED lighting on the tractor has not been correctly adjusted or fitted. This results in a poorly lit working environment. You can recognise a poorly lit working environment by the separate light beams that can be seen scattered haphazardly amongst the light beams on the working area. These uncoordinated dark patches can be seen in the comparison photo below (photo 1). This arrangement of work lights creates an abrupt, sharp light-dark boundary at the sides of the tractor and dark patches at the front of your tractor. As a result, you may not recognise hazards in time. This is therefore far from a truly safe working environment.
An example where the coordinated arrangement LED work lights is correct
With properly adjusted homogeneous lighting, this is of course a different story. By evenly distributing the work light around your tractor, you ensure that these dark, abrupt dark/light spots are no longer there. The focus of the light from the work light is in the middle and the softer parts of the light beams cross at the right time. This creates an even clear view in all directions around your tractor. As a driver, this enables you to recognise hazards earlier and react to them more accurately. So much the better for you and your colleagues. The picture above (photo 2) shows an example of a correctly lit working environment thanks to the correct mounting of LED work lights.
The main factors you should consider while mounting LED work lights
There are four essential parts when creating a homogeneously lighted working environment. These components can be divided into:
The reflector of the LED work light
At TRALERT®, we attach great importance to the reflector of the work light. When developing our work lights, we pay particular attention to the desired beam pattern in line with our customers’ specific applications. We ensure that the reflector surfaces, which direct the light towards the work area, provide optimal and precise reflection. For example, we utilise TIR and RFT lens technologies. The type of reflector lens used may vary from one work light to another. For example, there are lenses specifically designed for ‘wide beam’ illumination and lenses designed specifically for long-range illumination. To provide your tractor with a uniformly lit working environment in the immediate vicinity, we recommend a wide-beam work light. If, on the other hand, you are looking for driving lights, you might consider an LED bar or our smaller driving lights.
The mounting height of the LED work lights | Recommendation: at least two metres
Homogeneous lighting on your tractor is only possible with high mounting. That is why TRALERT® recommends a minimum height of 2 metres when mounting LED work lights. In most cases, the work lights are therefore attached to the roof of your tractor. This is the place that meets the 2m requirement to provide the right lighting angle to create a homogeneously lit workplace.
Tip: it is best to use a waterproof connector when connecting your work light. Connectors such as a SuperSeal connector protect the electrical connection from moisture and dirt.
Placement for mounting an LED work light
As the recommendation is two metres for mounting a work light, the roof of your tractor is a common place for mounting. Other common places to mount work lights are the mudguard and the mirror bar. Often these are smaller TRALERT® work light models that are used to illuminate, for example, one specific function. When mounting on the roof, take a good look at your tractor roof to find out whether there are prepared places for the TRALERT® work lights. You can often mount our LED work lights in the places of the existing halogen lighting. If this is not the case, you can always ask for advice from a TRALERT® specialist. Would you like to illuminate special places? You can always mount additional LED work lights on the mirror bar or mudguard, for example.
The set angle of inclination of the work light
We advise you to pay close attention to the correct alignment of the LED work lights to ensure a uniformly lit working area. Only correctly adjusted work lights provide an optimal beam pattern. So make sure you adjust the angle so that there are no longer any ‘blind spots’ between the light beams. If the current work lights fitted to your tractor are insufficient, consider the heavy-duty TRALERT® lighting for even greater light output.
