LED warning lights in the grill of a work bus: tips and points of attention

The short answer

LED warning lights fitted to the grill of a work van are increasingly being chosen as a professional solution to enhance front visibility. These may be used in combination with an LED beacon bar on the roof.

The choice of LED warning lights remains popular despite the fact that the front end of modern commercial vehicles is becoming increasingly complex. Think of cameras, distance sensors and radar systems for functions such as adaptive cruise control and emergency braking assistance. These systems must be able to function unimpeded. This must be taken into account when fitting LED warning lights.

The choice of LED warning lights in the grill is therefore not only about light output. It is about the right combination of:

  • R65 class (visibility)
  • Correct installation in accordance with ECE R48
  • EMC compatibility (R10)
  • Correct viewing angle
  • IP protection
  • Connection to 12V or 24V systems

When do you opt for LED warning lights in the grill?

LED warning lights enhance visibility precisely where oncoming traffic first spots you. When carrying out work at the roadside or on building sites, traffic almost always approaches from the front.

When combined with roof lighting, this creates a layered beam pattern:

  • Roof lights for long-distance visibility
  • Grill flashes for direct front impact
  • Possibly bumper position for urban deployment

This configuration is increasingly becoming standard within fleet projects.

Popular warning lights for in the grill

TRALERT® SF-1000 Series

This series of warning lights are ideally suited for harsh conditions. The SF-1000 Series was developed for professional use on vehicles used intensively on a daily basis.

The series is available in amber, white, red and blue.

The series is ADR homologated and thus suitable for vehicles used to transport hazardous goods. This provides certainties that the signalling meets the applicable requirements in specific transport applications.

In addition to ADR certification, this warning light also features IP69K protection (high-pressure resistant). This makes the SF-1000 particularly suitable for installation in the grill, where the lighting is directly exposed to water, dirt and stone chips. View the series

TRALERT® SF-2000 series

Another excellent option is the SF-2000 Series, which comes with a 200 cm cable as standard, making it ideal for flush mounting in the grill. Available in 4-LED and 6-LED versions. Furthermore, ECE R65 Class 2 compliance is another key feature of this series of warning lights. And the options: synchronised, alternating and cruise mode. The LED warning light is fully dust- and waterproof to protection class IP67. Thanks to its slim design (128x29x11 mm) and surface-mount installation, it can be easily integrated into the grill or fitted to the bodywork. View the series

What regulations apply to LED warning lights in the grill?

For LED warning lights fitted in the grill of a work van, three ECE regulations apply: R65 for light performance, R48 for installation and R10 for electromagnetic compatibility.

ECE R65 - light performance

R65 sets requirements for light intensity, flash patterns and visibility angles. An R65-certified warning light delivers demonstrable attention value and prevents glare.

Two classes exist within R65:

  • R65 Class 1 - suitable for standard applications
  • R65 Class 2 - higher light intensity, especially effective in bright daylight conditions

Do you do a lot of daytime work along busy roads? Then class 2 usually offers better visibility.

ECE R48 installation regulations for vehicle lighting

When installing LED warning lights and signalling equipment on vehicles, it is essential to comply with the ECE R48 guidelines. Whilst guidelines such as ECE R65 specify the technical requirements of the warning light itself, the ECE R48 standard governs the exact installation and integration onto the vehicle. Compliance with these regulations not only ensures legal conformity but also optimises road safety.

ECE R10 electromagnetic compatibility

The ECE R10 standard confirms that the lighting does not cause interference with on-board electronics and is itself interference-resistant. This is essential for vehicles equipped with driver assistance systems.

How do you install LED warning lights in the grill according to R48?

Mounting height and viewing angle determine effectiveness. Overall:

  • Below 80 cm: strong frontal impact, limited side visibility
  • 90-110 cm: optimum balance
  • Above 120 cm: less direct attention value

What often surprises many professionals is that, in practice, mounting height is frequently more important than maximum light intensity. You can download the full standard from our ECE R48 page.

Mounting in 12V and 24V systems

With 12V vehicles, voltage stability is more sensitive. Correct fuse, solid mass and possibly additional relays are essential.

In 24V applications, voltage drop is less of an issue, but correct cabling remains important. Professional installations typically use at least 1.5 mm² cables and waterproof vehicle connectors.

IP67 or IP69K for heavy duty use?

IP protection determines the durability of your LED warning lights.

  • IP67 is suitable for normal road use
  • IP69K is more resistant to daily high-pressure cleaning

In sectors with intensive cleaning, IP69K often proves more durable in practice.

Issues and pitfalls

With LED warning lights in the grill , problems can occur due to:

  • Incorrect R65 class
  • No synchronisation between units
  • Installation without regard to R48
  • Moisture and dust due to insufficient IP rating
  • Underestimation of lighting cabling at 12V

A well-thought-out configuration prevents subsequent adjustments.
