What is a 12 Volt LED Light?

A 12V LED light is an energy-efficient lighting solution that operates on a low-voltage 12V current. This type of lighting is versatile and is used in domestic settings and vehicles such as cars, motorhomes and trailers. Thanks to their low energy consumption and long service life, 12V LED lights are a popular choice in both professional and domestic settings.
How does a 12V LED light work?
12V LED lamps operate using light-emitting diodes that produce a clear light at a low current. They usually operate on direct current (DC), as this provides a more stable light and extends the lamp’s lifespan. Most 12V LED lamps have a built-in LED driver that regulates and stabilises the current.
Are most LED lights 12V DC?
Not all LED lights are 12V direct current (DC). LED lights can have different voltages, including 12V, 24V and even 230V for use in household installations. However, 12V LEDs are the most common choice for applications such as cars, boats and motorhomes, as these lights are designed to operate at low voltage. This makes them safer, easier to connect and ideal for mobile applications where a constant and stable power supply is needed. For example, the 12V DC power supply ensures that the LED lights perform optimally with less risk of damage or interference.

The difference between an AC light and a DC light
The difference between an AC light (alternating current) and a DC light (direct current) is the power supply. AC lights operate on a current that continuously changes direction, while DC lights operate on a constant current in one direction. LEDs are by nature DC devices, so they work more efficiently on DC current. AC lights therefore need a driver to stabilise the current.
12 volt LED bulb vs 24 volt LED light: what's the difference?
The difference between 12V and 24V LED lights is mainly in the voltage at which they operate. A 24V LED lamp needs a higher voltage than a 12 volt light, which brings a number of advantages and disadvantages:
- Efficiency and Consumption: 24V LED lights are often more efficient than 12V lights, especially on long cable runs, because there is less voltage drop. This makes them suitable for larger vehicles, industrial applications and places where longer distances need to be covered.
- Safety: 12V LED lights are safer to use in situations where the lights come into direct contact with people, such as in motorhomes, caravans or boats. Because the voltage is low, there is less risk of shock or short circuit.
- Installation and Compatibility: 12V is often more compatible with a wider range of accessories and power supplies. Especially in cars and other vehicles that use standard 12V systems.
12 Volt LED lights in the vehicle industry
- Cars and vans: 12V LED lights are used for headlights, rear lights, interior lights, licence plate lights and dashboard lights.
- Motorhomes and Caravans: Due to their low voltage and efficiency, they are perfect for interior and exterior lighting in motorhomes and caravans, where they contribute to energy savings.
- Boats and Yachts: 12V LED lights are often used in maritime applications for navigation, deck and interior lighting. Obviously waterproof with at least IP67 or IP68 rating).
- Trucks and Commercial Vehicles: In work vehicles such atrucksst and vans, 12 volt lights are used for signal lighting, marker lights and work lights.
- Agriculture and Construction Vehicles: Consider tractors, mowers, excavators and forklifts that use 12V LED work lights for work lights, signal lights and extra lighting for safe working in dark or dusty environments.
What does the lumen count of a 12 Volt LED light say?
When choosing a 12-Volt LED light, it is important to consider the light output, which is measured in lumen. Lumens (lm) indicate how much visible light a bulb produces, meaning that the higher the number lumen, the clearer the light. This is different from wattage, which indicates the amount of energy a bulb consumes. With LED lighting, the ratio of lumen to wattage is much more efficient than with traditional incandescent bulbs; an LED bulb requires far less power to produce the same amount of light.
