Male vs female connector: how can you tell the difference?
- Updated:
- By: Kevin van Mierlo
In vehicle lighting, the right connector plays a key role in ensuring a safe and reliable connection. When discussing connectors, we use the terms male ’ and female’. Many people look first at the plastic housing. However, this is not the decisive factor; what matters is what is inside the connector . If you see pins there, we refer to it as male ; if you see openings, it is female’.

The golden rule
Don’t just look at the outside. Always check the metal contacts on the inside.
- Metal pins = male
- Metal sockets = female
Where do things often go wrong?
Some female connectors slide into the male housing. As a result, many people assume that the connector that fits inside is automatically male .
That’s not correct.
The designation is always determined by the contacts, not by the shape of the housing.
Male connector
A male connector has metal pins. These pins make contact with the other connector. Because it is hollow, you might think this is the female , but that is not the case.

Female connector
A female connector has metal sockets or contact bushings. The pins of the male connector fit into these. See also the explanation of the female Deutsch connector

It is not the plastic housing that makes the difference. It is the metal contacts that determine whether a connector is male or female . This helps you avoid ordering the wrong connector .
Not sure? Just look at the pins or sockets. You’ll know straight away whether you need a male or female connector .
