ECE R150: the standard for retroreflectors and contour marking

Definition

ECE R150 is the UNECE regulation for the type approval of retro-reflective devices and markings on vehicles and trailers. The standard consolidates older regulations such as R3, R27, R69, R70 and R104. ECE R150 concerns product approval; ECE R48, amongst others, applies to mounting on the vehicle.

This page explains what ECE R150 regulates, which old regulations it covers and how the standard relates to R104 and R48. So you can quickly understand which standard is about what within vehicle construction, marking and lighting.

What is ECE R150?

ECE R150 is the UN regulation governing the type approval of retro-reflective devices and markings on motor vehicles and trailers. These include reflectors, retro-reflective contour markings, marker plates and warning triangles. The standard specifies when such a product is approved and which performance requirements it must meet.

Above all, remember this: R150 is about the product and its approval, not about its placement on the vehicle. Where and how you mount a marking is covered by other regulations. That distinction prevents a lot of confusion during surface mounting. The regulation came about in 2019 within the World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29), initiated by the European Union and Japan.

Which old rules does ECE R150 bundle?

ECE R150 brings together five previous regulations under one umbrella. Each previously regulated a separate type of retroreflective device.

Old regulationTopic
ECE R3Retroreflectors for vehicles and trailers
ECE R27Hazard triangles
ECE R69Rear marking plates for slow-moving vehicles
ECE R70Rear marking plates for heavy and long vehicles
ECE R104Retroreflective markings on heavy and long vehicles

R150 brings together several older rules. As a result, documentation may contain both an old designation, such as R104, and the newer R150 context.

ECE R150 vs ECE R104: which rule do you follow?

This is the question that comes up most often in practice. Many mechanics and purchasers still know ECE R104 contour marking as the standard for retroreflective contour marking on heavy and long vehicles. That term lives on on products, in catalogues and in existing documentation.

In modern regulations, R104 is placed within the broader R150 structure. In practice, the designation R104 may still appear on products, certificates and market information. If you are looking for information on contour marking as an application, the R104 explanation remains relevant. If you want to understand the modern approval context, look to R150.

ECE R150 vs ECE R48: approval versus mounting

A second common mistake is confusing R150 with the assembly rules. Yet these are two different tracks. ECE R150 regulates whether a retroreflective device is approved and how well it performs. ECE R48 mounting requirements then determines where the device should be on the vehicle, in what numbers and at what distances.

That difference is important in vehicle assembly. You first select an approved component and then assemble it according to the applicable installation rules. Anyone who confuses the two runs the risk of errors during inspection or delivery.

Does ECE R150 apply to trailers and semi-trailers?

Yes. The regulation applies to retro-reflective devices and markings on motor vehicles and their trailers. Consequently, R150 does not cover the entire trailer lighting system, but it does cover the retro-reflective markings that may be incorporated during the same installation process.

The exact application depends on the vehicle category, dimensions and type of marking. For exact placement and numbers, again look at the mounting rules, not R150 itself.

R150 is not the same as side marker lights

This is where confusion quickly arises. ECE R150 is about retroreflective devices, i.e. material that reflects light. Active ECE R91 side marker lights that themselves emit light fall under a different standards track, with separate mounting rules. So reflective marking and illuminating lights are two different categories, each with its own regulations.

Practical points for vehicle construction

Are you working on bodybuilding, semi-trailer construction or assembly preparation? Then run through these points:

  • Check that the product itself is approved. This is covered by the R150 track.
  • Distinguish between reflective marking and active lighting. They follow different rules.
  • Determine placement and numbers via mounting requirements, not R150.
  • Please note the vehicle category and dimensions, as these determine which marking is required.
  • For type approvals or inspections, always use the current official documentation as a guide.

For legal and type approval questions, the applicable official text and the competent approval authority are ultimately decisive. TRALERT® makes the connection to vehicle lighting comprehensible, but does not act as a standards authority.

TRALERT® supports your construction process

Are you working on vehicle bodies where lighting, cabling and visibility come together? Then marking, lighting and mounting often come together in one process. For lighting, cable sets and connection solutions, TRALERT® supports bodybuilders and vehicle manufacturers with suitable LED vehicle lighting.

Frequently asked questions about ECE R150

Does ECE R150 replace the R104 standard?

ECE R150 brings R104 together with four other old regulations into one regulation. In modern documentation, R104 is placed within that R150 structure. The designation R104 may still be on existing products or certificates, referring to the older context round contour marking.

What is the difference between ECE R150 and ECE R48?

ECE R150 regulates the approval of retroreflective devices and markings, i.e. the product itself. ECE R48 regulates the installation on the vehicle: the placement, number and distances. So you first choose an approved component and then mount it according to the applicable placement rules.

Are side-marker lights covered by ECE R150?

No. ECE R150 deals exclusively with retroreflective devices, i.e. material that reflects light. Active side marker lights that themselves emit light fall under a different standards track, with separate rules for mounting on the vehicle.

Which old regulations are bundled in ECE R150?

ECE R150 brings together five previous regulations: R3 for retroreflectors, R27 for warning triangles, R69 for rear marking of slow vehicles, R70 for rear marking of heavy and long vehicles and R104 for retroreflective markings.
