ADR lighting for night transport and route duty: requirements and practical tips
- Updated:
- By: Kevin van Mierlo
The short answer
Poor visibility and dark conditions increase the risk of accidents when transporting dangerous goods. At night, the reaction time of other road users is shorter. Unclear lighting can then cause immediate danger. With route duty, recognisability becomes even more important.
In this article, you will read:
- What route duty means and which lighting requirements apply to ADR vehicles during night-time transport, including the main ECE rules for marking, contour and reflective lighting.
- Practical tips on mounting and maintenance, plus examples of suitable lighting for these situations.
The ADR regulations and ECE requirements provide clear guidelines to ensure your vehicle is always visible. In this article, you’ll discover the requirements that apply to ADR lighting for night-time transport and mandatory route requirements. You will also learn how to apply these requirements in practice. Be sure to read our article ‘ADR lighting: an explanation of the regulations and practical tips’.

Route requirement and visibility
In the Netherlands, route requirements apply to hazardous substances such as explosives, toxic gases and flammable liquids. You may then only drive along pre-designated routes. Deviations are only allowed with an exemption from the municipality or via the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).
These routes limit risks for people and the environment. Additional lighting is not obligatory for mandatory routes, but it does increase safety. For night transport, it makes your vehicle instantly recognisable to other road users.
For maximum safety during night-time transport, choose the right ADR marker and work lights that are suitable for long operating hours.
ADR lighting during night-time transport: legal requirements
The ADR regulations (Accord Dangereux Routier) do not contain separate rules for night-time transport. The visibility requirements apply at all times. The positioning and installation of lighting are governed by the European ECE regulations, in particular ECE R48.
Important ECE requirements are:
- Side marker lights: compulsory for vehicles and trailers longer than 6 m; maximum 3 m between lights.
- Contour lights: mandatory for vehicles wider than 2.10 m.
- Reflectors: mandatory rear and side; additional conspicuity markings on some ADR vehicles (ECE R104).
- Lighting for N3 vehicles: mandatory headlights, rear lights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights and reversing lights.
- Trailers: similar obligations with adapted fitting requirements.

ADR-specific requirements for lighting
Not every ADR transport has additional lighting requirements. These mainly apply to high-risk vehicle categories:
- EX/II and EX/III (explosives) - see Explosion-proof lighting for EX/II & EX/III ADR vehicles
- FL (flammable liquids) - see ADR lighting for FL tankers: requirements and applications
- AT (tank vehicles for chemical and gas transport) - see ADR lighting for AT vehicles: chemical and gas transport
For these vehicles, ADR Part 9 sets requirements for electrical installations:
- Lights and luminaires must sometimes be explosion-proof (zone 1 or 2).
- Electrical components must be ADR-certified and appropriately marked.
Summary table of lighting requirements
| Section | ECE R48 (general) | ADR-specific |
|---|---|---|
| Component: Side marker lights | ECE R48 (general)Mandatory for vehicles/trailers >6 m; max. 3 m between lights | ADR-specific: Same requirement; certification required for EX/FL in Zone 1/2 |
| Section: Contour lighting | ECE R48 (general)Mandatory for vehicles wider than 2.10 m | ADR-specific: Certification required for EX/FL in zones 1/2 |
| Component: Reflectors | ECE R48 (general): Mandatory for rear and side; ECE R104 for conspicuity markings | ADR-specific: Often mandatory for tankers |
| Category: Headlamps, rear lights, brake lights | ECE R48 (general)Mandatory for all vehicles | ADR-specific ADR certificationfor EX/FL |
| Category: Work Lighting | ECE R48 (general)Not mandatory; must not cause glare | ADR-specific: Only explosion-proof versions are permitted for EX/FL |
Practical tips on mounting and maintenance
- Before departure, check all lighting, including marker and contour lights.
- Use sturdy mounting and choose a high IP value (at least IP67) for protection against water and dust.
- Protect cabling with ADR-capable feed-throughs, sleeves or protective hoses.
- Mount vibration-proof with shock-absorbing elements.
Suitable lighting solutions
- Explosion-proof LED marker lamps for EX/II and EX/III vehicles.
- LED contour lights with ECE and ADR approval for vehicles wider than 2.10 m.
- Side marker lighting with high IP rating for extreme conditions.
