IP value stands for International Protection Rating. It is an indication of the degree of protection of the construction of electrical or electronic equipment against its own damage through use in "hostile environments" and against possible danger to the user. In other words, the IP rating is the value to which the device is resistant against external influences. The IP value always consists of two digits. The first digit indicates the degree to which the lamp is resistant to hard substances. The second digit indicates the degree of resistance against liquid substances. IP68, for example, indicates that it is both dust and waterproof. Each object needs a different IP value. This also depends on the purpose for which the object is used. For example, a light for a boat trailer needs a higher IP value than one for the interior. The IP value is later clearly displayed in a table.
The IP designation is internationally standardised in the standard IEC 60529. The IP designation has two digits: the first digit indicates the degree of protection against touching and penetration by objects and the second digit indicates the degree of protection against moisture. For example, a device marked IP68 is dustproof and waterproof.
IP value, the degree of protection against contact and penetration by objects
Instead of the 'x', the second digit can be thought of, or the 'x' can be taken to mean that protection against moisture is not important. In the table below, only the first digit of the IP value is considered. It therefore only indicates the degree of protection against touch and penetrating objects.

Protection against liquid substances
The second number within the IP value indicates the degree of protection against liquid substances, such as water and moisture. In the table below, only the second number of the IP value is considered.

What IP coding do I need?
The IP value that your lamp must meet depends on the purpose for which you are going to use it. For example, atmospheric lighting used in the living room does not need as high an IP value as a lamp on a boat trailer. Sounds logical, but still something to take into account. Vehicle lighting should generally be able to withstand all weather conditions. To be sure that your lighting is not affected by outside influences, it is best to choose lighting with an IP68 rating.
