What is IP-Certification?

IP coding stands for International Protection Rating. It indicates the degree of protection of the construction of electrical or electronic equipment against its own damage through use in "hostile environments" and against possible danger to the user. In other words, the IP rating is the value to which the device is resistant against external influences. The IP value always consists of two digits. The first digit indicates the degree to which the lamp is resistant to hard substances. The second digit indicates the degree of resistance against liquid substances. IP68, for example, indicates that it is both dust and waterproof.

IEC 605289

The IP designation is internationally standardised in the standard IEC 60529. The IP designation has two digits: the first digit indicates the degree of protection against touching and penetration by objects and the second digit indicates the degree of protection against moisture. For example, a device marked IP68 is dustproof and waterproof.

IP coding, the degree of protection against touch and penetrating objects

In the position of the x, the second digit represents the level of protection against moisture. Also, the 'x' can mean that the protection against moisture is not important.

IP coding Protection against Meaning
0x No protection
1x Large objects Protection against accidental, superficial hand touch. Protected against penetration of solid objects larger than 50 mm
2x Average-sized objects Protection against finger touch. Safe to touch only for measuring devices. Protected against penetration by solid objects larger than 12.5 mm.
3x Small objects Protection against contact with a tool. Safe to touch only for measuring devices. Protected against penetration of solid objects larger than 2.5 mm.
4x Pointed objects Protection against contact with a tool. Protected against contact with a wire. Protected against penetration of solid objects larger than 1 mm.
5x Dust protection Safe to touch because the housing is completely sealed. Not completely protected against dust but sufficient enough to not obstruct proper operation
6x Completely dust resistant Safe to touch thanks to a completely sealed enclosure. Complete protection against dust.

Level of protection against moisture

IP coding IEC Protection against Meaning
0 IP-X0 No protection
1 IP-X1 Dripping water Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect on the product when mounted in an upright position onto a turntable and rotated at 1 RPM.
2 IP-X2 Dripping water when tilted up to 15° Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle of 15° from its normal position. A total of four positions are tested within two axes.
3 IP-X3 Spraying water Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical axis shall have no harmful effect.
4 IP-X4 Splashing water Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect.
5 IP-X5 Water jets Water projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
6 IP-X6 Powerful water jets Water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
7 IP-X7 Immersion up to 1 meters deep Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) of submersion).
8 IP-X8 Immersion beyond 1 meters deep The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer.
9 IP-X9 Moistureproof Remains usable at more than 90% humidity or spraying under high pressure

What IP coding do I need?

The IP value that your lighting needs to meet depends on the purpose for which you are going to use it. For example, mood lighting that you use in the living room will not need a as high IP value as lighting on a boat trailer. Sounds logical, but still something to take into account. Vehicle lighting should generally be able to withstand all weather conditions. To be sure that your lighting is not affected by outside influences, it is best to choose lighting with an IP68 rating. With this, you can be sure that it is completely dustproof and waterproof.
